New Beginnings on Maui
New Beginnings on Maui
Summer is in full swing as June has arrived, ushering in a busy season of diverse events and activities. As the passing of each month seems to bring new changes to West Maui, we’d like to share one exciting development with you. We believe that small business is often the heartbeat of a community and its economy. And never is that more relevant than on a beautiful little island in the middle of the Pacific. So, it’s great to watch The Cannery Mall in Lahaina partner with a diverse group of stores, shops and services, to bring yet another aspect of our community back to business.
Anchoring a new wing just south of the existing Cannery Mall complex, a full-service Bank of Hawaii has recently opened their doors with the following businesses set to open in the coming months – Lahaina Gelato, Fork & Salad, Lahaina Jewelry and West Maui Sports and Fishing Supply. They also just welcomed local favorite, Kalei’s Lunchbox to the location previously occupied by Denny’s and are well underway on the future gas station in the Southeast corner.
When you think about it, those seven entities really comprise a full spectrum of life on Maui. You can make a deposit, grab some gear, fuel up, have lunch, spring for some bling, and treat yourself to dessert! As many of these businesses are reestablishing from the Front Street area, it really is starting to feel like a part of Lahaina is returning.
In fact, later this month the County of Maui Recovery Office will begin the process of inviting community members to provide input as to how the streets in the commercial core of Lahaina – including Front Street – will be rebuilt. The plan is to offer a series of design workshops and open house type events. With this next step in place, we remain hopeful for the future of the small business community in Lahaina and are looking forward to sharing more updates soon.
Until then, hui hou! And enjoy the days of summer – wherever you are.
