Price Kuhio: Traditional Values & Modern Solutions
Price Kuhio: Traditional Values & Modern Solutions
Did you know that Prince Kuhio Day, March 26, is a Hawaiian State Holiday? You may be asking: Who was he and why is the holiday particularly relevant to us this year?
Prince Kuhio Day is a time to honor the legacy of Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalaniana‘ole, a leader whose vision for Hawaiian self-determination and land stewardship continues to shape the islands today. His efforts led to the establishment of the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act, ensuring that Native Hawaiians had a place to call home. Today, his legacy comes full circle as Hawaiian Homelands play a crucial role in providing relief and shelter to those affected by the Lahaina fires.
In response to the devastating fires in Lahaina, the Hawaiian Homelands Council partnered with the Army Corps of Engineers and the non-profit, Aloha Ranch to create an emergency housing solution. With a goal of establishing 450 temporary housing units installed for immediate occupancy, the initiative provides a safe haven for those displaced by the disaster.
With permission granted by the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL) to utilize this parcel, these units will serve the community for the next five years. This period will not only provide stability for displaced families but also allow time to develop long-term housing. At the end of the five years, the temporary houses will be removed and DHHL will be able to use the existing infrastructure to complete the next phase of permanent homes.
The Lahaina fire recovery efforts exemplify what Prince Kuhio started all those years ago to combine traditional values and modern solutions.
As we reflect upon Prince Kuhio Day, let us remember his unwavering belief in the power of community. His legacy lives on in every home built, every family supported.
