The Moments in Between

The Moments in Between

The Moments in Between

Aloha Family & Friends,

The sun’s out, the South swell waves are breaking, and the sounds of laughter and play can be heard all around which means: It’s officially summer in Maui!

One of our very favorite trends that coincides with this time of the year is the return of the “families.” A traditionally notable season where we see a spike in minivan rentals across the island and the lines for favorite shave ice or ice cream shops can often wrap around the corner. But, in truth, there’s so much more to it than that.

For example, we had dinner last week at Longhi’s in Ka’anapali which was, as always, a nice evening. Enjoying the ambience (and the spectacular sunset), we couldn’t help but notice how many large tables were filled with what appeared to be multi-generational families. Great, right? But what was even better? There were several long moments when no one – and we mean NO ONE was looking at their phone. The only time phones came “out” were for quick family photos. When was the last time you saw ‘no phones’ in an entire place of business?

And it’s not an isolated case. Last week we also attended the soft opening of Aurum, a new restaurant in South Maui. One of the owners stood to thank all for attending, and he said some things that really hit home. He said:

“Life happens in restaurants. Families happen. People fall in love. Laughter happens. Okay, sometimes divorce happens too but that’s beside the point. It’s a place to unplug and be in the moment.”

We got to thinking about it and he’s right. But it’s not just in restaurants – life happens at the beach. On boats. While watching surfers. Or standing in line waiting for that ice cream as the kids make up a game to pass the time.

These are moments we get to disconnect. And island life is a little like that. It gives us space for a brief “digital detox,” if you will.

With a little effort, that may be possible anywhere. But against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean and swaying palms, it’s a lot easier. And we are so grateful for that.

So, the next time you want to put your phone down, DO IT. Or …

Go to the travel website and book a flight to Maui. Find a nice hotel and settle into your own digital detox. Or better yet … ask us about a condo.

We’ll catch you next month, but until then, enjoy the moments in between.

Aloha, Greg & Leah

Hawaiian BBQ Skewers with Sriracha Lime Honey Butter
Instructions
  1. To make the Hawaiian BBQ sauce, whisk together the BBQ sauce, pineapple juice, lime juice and cilantro in a medium size bowl. Now add the chicken to a gallon size ziplock bag or medium bowl and toss with 1/4 cup of the BBQ mixture.
  2. Set your grill, grill pan or skillet to medium-high heat. Thread chicken pieces, pineapple chunks and bell peppers together, alternating one after another on skewers. Brush the skewers lightly with olive oil. Grill the skewers until lightly charred and cooked through, turning them occasionally throughout cooking, about 10 to 12 minutes total. Transfer the skewers to a plate.
  3. Brush the skewers with sriracha butter (below) and serve with extra Hawaiian BBQ sauce. EAT!

Sriracha Lime Honey Butter:

  • Mix together all the ingredients in a bowl. Serve at room temperature.

Enjoy!
